Day Program
The Charter School of Tampa Bay Academy also offers a Day Program for " ESE " Deaf students residing in Hillsborough County who are unable to be maintained within a public community school or whose behavior demands more intensive services than currently available through the local public school system. These students receive educational services through the Charter School of Tampa Bay Academy in a Deaf-friendly and linguistically appropriate environment.
Many Deaf students, due to a lack of communication, do poorly in public school. Most Deaf students read at least two levels below their hearing peers. If a Deaf student is the only Deaf student in the school and is struggling with their schoolwork, it can lead to many behavioral problems. Not only is the Deaf student feeling isolated but many times due to their limited language they have a hard time understanding their teachers even with the use of an interpreter.
The student's feelings of isolation and frustration can lead to "acting out", and if intervention is not appropriate and timely, the student can experience significant educational delays, language deficiencies and more severe emotional problems. This idea of appropriate intervention is difficult for many school systems due to lack of knowledge of cultural issues related to Deafness, lack of qualified professionals to provide intervention services, lack of staff who are proficient in American Sign Language, and lack of ability to provide safe structured environments where students can achieve academic success and develop a strong sense of emotional well-being.
The Charter School of Tampa Bay Academy has teachers and other educational staff who work hard to assist with language acquisition which in turn increases the student's self-esteem, emotional well-being and overall academic performance.
The educational approach used with our Deaf students is the Bilingual-Bicultural. This means we first teach Deaf students American Sign Language so they have a language base with which they can interact with the world. As a result, they are able to learn English and develop reading and writing skills. By helping the Deaf students feel more able to achieve in a school setting and addressing their previous "acting out" behaviors, the students become more prepared to return to their home schools successfully.
Transportation is provided to and from The Charter School of Tampa Bay Academy for eligible students from Hillsborough County Schools. Students in the Day Program receive a full day of school in a supportive environment which encourages success. Students in the Charter School receive full case management and discharge planning. All diploma options are available including Standard, Certificate of Completion and Special Certificate of Completion.
