Deaf Program at Tampa Bay Academy Florida offers a variety of programs and services designed specifically to meet the unique needs of Deaf Children and adolescentsThe Deaf Program at Tampa Bay Academy offers a variety of programs and services designed specifically to meet the unique needs of Deaf Children and adolescents. The Deaf Program is staffed with professionals with a Deaf culture perspective who are committed to providing the best services possible to the children with whom they work.

The Deaf Program provides its children and adolescents with a safe, accepting environment in which to explore their fears, hopes, concerns and culturally sensitive issues. For some, our program represents the first time they have been in a safe and secure, structured environment where they are physically, emotionally and psychologically safe.

Clinical Team

Tampa Bay Academy's Deaf Program clinical team includes culturally Deaf Masters level licensed and license eligible therapists. The therapists specialize Tampa Bay Academy's Deaf Program clinical team includes culturally Deaf Masters level licensed and license eligible therapistsin:

  • Deafness-related issues
  • mental health counseling
  • alcohol and drug addiction therapy
  • sex therapy
  • domestic violence treatment
  • play therapy

Specialty groups are offered for dual diagnosis, sexual abuse, physical abuse, relationship issues and life skills.

The treatment team is led by a Board Certified Child Psychiatrist who has long-standing interest and involvement with Deaf and hard of hearing individuals.

Family Therapy

Tampa Bay Academy uses technology when offering family therapy. Telephone/TTY therapy or video conferencing are two options for holding family therapy for families from other states.The Deaf Program team provides therapeutic support to the patients and their families. For the families of our patients from other states, Tampa Bay Academy uses technology when offering family therapy. Telephone/TTY therapy or video conferencing are two options for holding family therapy. Occasionally, a Deaf Program therapist may travel to an area from which several of our patients come and arrange family sessions while in that area. When needed, interpreters are involved in sessions to facilitate communication for non-signing family members.

All of these services are tailored to develop a specific individualized treatment plan for each patient. The treatment plan is used to treat each patient's needs in a way that is most helpful to him or her. These lists are not inclusive, but are listed as an example of the kinds of treatment offered at Tampa Bay Academy.
